What Is Cervicogenic Headache?

Cervicogenic Headache is a headache caused by pain signals from the neck, often near the upper joints, muscles, or nerves. The pain may begin in the neck and spread toward the back, side, or front of the head. Neck movement, posture, or pressure can make symptoms worse.

  • Pain often travels from the neck toward the head.
  • Cervicogenic headaches aren't the same as migraines.

How Cervicogenic Headache Works

Cervicogenic Headache begins with irritation in the neck, but the brain may feel the pain in the head. This happens because nerves in the upper neck share pathways with nerves that serve the head and face.

Neck motion, sustained posture, or pressure around the upper neck can affect symptoms. A clinician may look at neck movement, muscle tension, joint motion, and the way pain travels. These findings help separate a neck-related headache from a migraine or another headache pattern.

Treatment may address the neck and surrounding tissues. Care can include gentle joint work, soft-tissue techniques, posture changes, and exercises that support neck movement. The right approach depends on the person’s symptoms and examination findings.

From the Advanced Injury Care Clinic team

When we assess a cervicogenic headache, we examine the neck, posture, movement, and pain pattern together. We also note whether neck activity changes the headache. Our team uses those findings to guide care within Headache Treatment and to recognize patterns that may need medical evaluation.

Cervicogenic Headache in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person develops pain at the base of the skull after long periods at a computer. The pain increases when the neck turns, so the examination focuses on neck movement and related muscle tension.
